Inspired by a true story from the Korean Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms, Mokwha Repertory Company’s The Tempest is set in 5th century Korea, infusing Shakespeare’s text with elements of traditional Korean folklore. With music played on Korean instruments and richly layered costumes, this fantastical production will explore the limitations and possibilities of nature through the acts of betrayal, love, forgiveness, and eventual reconciliation. Traditional Korean aesthetics, language, and expressions inspire Director Oh’s unique theatre methodology: his work is rooted in Korea’s cultural past and present. The Tempest will introduce various aspects of Korean history, tradition, and culture to La MaMa’s stage.
Mokwha Repertory Company’s The Tempest is unique, fascinating and riotously enjoyable. With its enthusiastic performances, direction which nods to the fourth wall, and colorfully creative design, Mokwha’s The Tempest casts an irresistible spell over audiences and provides a rare opportunity to see an adaptation of Shakespeare through a traditional Korean lens.
The Tempest was officially invited by the 2011 Edinburgh International Arts Festival and awarded the Herald Angel’s Award.

셰익스피어 ‘템페스트’ 한국의 ‘삼국유사’와 만나다.

동서양을 막론하고 전 세계인들이 공감할수 있는 보편적 가치를 담은 작품, 셰익스피어의 템페스트. 이 작품을 대한민국 연극계의 거장 오태석의 각색, 연출 그리고 극단 목화 배우들의 역동적이고 넘치는 에너지의 움직임을 담아 셰익스피어의 텍스트를 한국적 전통으로 풀어냈다.

가야와 신라가 다투던 5세기 남해안의 어떤 섬을 배경으로  프로스페로는 가락국의 8대 왕인 지지왕으로, 나폴리 왕 알론조는 신라의 20대 자비왕으로 변신하였고 괴물 에어리얼은 한국 무속신앙의 액막이 인형인 제웅, 캐리반은 머리 둘 달린 쌍두아로 한국적인 캐릭터를 입혔다. 오태석 특유의 연출력인 생략과, 비약, 의외성과 즉흥성이 백중놀이, 만담, 씻김굿 등 선조들의 볼거리와 잘 어울려져 있다.  특히 우리말 특유의 3.4조, 4.4 조 운율을 살려 대사를 만들어 셰익스피어 극이 지닌 시적 울림을 우리식으로 표현하고자 한다.

템페스트는 2011년 에딘버러 인터내셔널 페스티벌에 공식 초청되었으며, 페스티벌 참가작 중 뛰어난 작품을 선정해 주는 상인 헤럴드 엔젤 상을 수상하였다. 이후 헝가리와 이탈리아에 초청되어 공연하였으며, 이번  라마마 공연 또한 라마마 템페스트 시리즈의 일환으로 미국 뮤지컬 템페스트, 이탈리아 템페스트와 함께 초청되었다.

극단 목화는 1984년 연출가 오태석과 그의 제자들이 주축이 되어 창단된 극단이며 우리 전통 연희의 특징을 기반으로 동시대의 서양 드라마적 연극 요소들과 동양 연극의 전통적인 요소들을 조율하여 고유의 무대 언어를 구축해온 한국 연극계의 대표적인 극단이다.
