Dance Parade is looking for a few good men and women to join the force...the New York Dance Police!
Members of the NYDP peruse the crowd and issue out summonses to those not enjoying themselves, standing still and looking like they're simply not having a good time! Enforcing positive energy and sheer fun is the mantra of the NYDP and local dance companies and schools have offered discount passes and coupons for free classes in which we disguise as 'citations' promoting our annual parade and festival.

OUR CORE VALUES
Honor:
By ordering dance genres in historical order, ancient to modern, the parade represents all cultures and styles of dance to be honored. DanceFest invites the public to both participate and enjoy a taste of the parade.
Creativity:
We are inspired by imagination and innovation. We encourage artistry not only in dance performances but also in the vehicles. Dance Police joyously ticket bystanders for not dancing.
Support:
As an umbrella organization, Dance Parade empowers and supports dance communities that do not have access to public funding yet have a communicative art form they wish to practice and promote. We help them build websites, get access to materials, fundraise, and reach broader audiences.
Educate:
Offer a public stage to and advance knowledge of a near-limitless range of human dance styles.
Unity:
We encourage a non-competitive spirit and common love of dance among diverse cultures and genres. Our participants come together to respect Dance’s diversity. Dance is vital in healthy societies, helping people to communicate and affirm individual and collective identity. Dance Parade is a multi-cultural, multi-generational expression of the joy and value of these various forms of expression. It will foster cross-pollination of dance forms as it introduces audiences to novel styles and beats: teenagers to tango, clubbers to square-dancing, and seniors to hip-hop.
Accept:
We acknowledge dance as a communicative, social form of expression. In the 19th century, ballroom dancing was deemed devil’s work. In the 1920’s, New York City enacted the Cabaret Law to stem interracial dancing from Harlem Jazz Clubs. The 1930’s had Nazi Germany quashing Swing Dancing because it was considered anarchistic. And in 2006, a New York State Supreme Court ruled that, unlike music, theater and painting, dance is not a constitutionally protected form of expression. In contrast, Dance Parade will highlight the diversity found in its many forms and showcase dance’s immense cultural and communicative importance.
Celebrate:
The parade and festival serve to invoke joy and brotherhood. | | |

Genre Buzz : ELECTRO DANCE
by Dawn Paap
Electro dance or Tecktonik is a frenetic and quirky form of street dance which is typically performed to electro house music. It is based on, although is not limited to, a blend of different dance styles, such as Industrial, Disco, Vogue, Waacking, Hip-Hop and Freehand Glowsticking.
It started in the 2000s and originated from the southern suburbs of Paris, France, mainly from the Metropolis nightclubs and has grown around the world. Fast-paced techno and electro house music imported from Northern Europe is the usual choice for Tecktonik dancing.

Join The Dance Parade
Street Team!
Facebook, Twitter and all the other hundreds of Social Media Sites out there are wonderful for sharing ideas and more but there's nothing like actual old fashioned on foot promotion to help spread the word of Dance Parade. Every year, we assemble a group of people to visit prominent and popular businesses, community centers, dance studios and community centers along the parade route and all across New York City and see if they will support our event by letting us put up a flyer and some postcards in their establishment. The DP Street Team meets up on the weekends and takes the city by storm to spread new of the magic we create on Dance Parade Day.
Interested in joining? Please email Chauncey@danceparade.org
We are also always open to suggestions and ideas on how to promote and where to go to do it and do it right. Also, please visit our "Spread The Word" page to download press packets and graphics to display on your blog, website, Facebook wall and anywhere else you want!

Volunteer Spotlight :
Patrick Nommenson
“…cultures from around the world come together to celebrate their passion – dance. “
Dance Parade, Inc. is a volunteer supported non-profit organization! It is the dedication, expertise and rhythm of these brave few that are solely responsible for the success of the event and all the background work that goes on all year long leading up to the parade and festival. Every month, we choose a different volunteer to spotlight. We ask them a few questions to let you know who they are, where they’ve come from and where they see themselves in the future.
How did you first stumble upon Dance Parade?
I actually first stumbled upon Dance Parade on an online volunteer listing. The listing was asking for volunteers to help with WordPress.
What is your current role in Dance Parade?
I am part of the Web Committee headed by Hal Lamster. Typically Hal emails me what needs to be done on the website and I’ll make the changes. I’m mainly involved with the information and look of the website.
What is your favorite style of dance to watch? to participate in?
I enjoy watching traditional dance styles of third world countries though I don’t really like to participate – I guess I’m more of an observer!
