A Spectacular Evening of Korean Poetry, Music, and Dance
Date- Sunday, February 23rd at 6:30 in Flushing Town Hall
where - 137-35 Northern Boulevard (and Linden Place), Flushing, Queens, New York
To begin the program, well-known poems by Ko Un and Kim Chi-ha, among others, will be projected from the roof of the POEMobile, a hand-painted truck and travelling cinema of words, onto the exterior of Flushing Town Hall. The poetry program, with additional poems authored by Ko Won and Yoon-Ho Cho, as well as translations by Sung-Il Lee (kasas), Kyung-Nyun Kim Richards & Steffen F. Richards, Rachel S. Rhee, and Irene S. Yoon, will continue inside Flushing Town Hall’s gallery and be accompanied by traditional music and dance by Vong Pak (janggu, Korean drum), Oak Joo Moon (pansori, Korean opera), and Myeong-Soon Choi (dance). Poetry will be in Korean with the projections morphing into English translations. Award-winning poet and novelist Sang-Hee Kwak and Korean- American poet Christina Shin, professor and translator Hong Ai Bai, and Kwang- Ryul Cho, son of the late, noted poet and critic Cho Ji-Hoon, will read poems on the subjects of spring, renewal, homeland, and love, accompanied by projections of text from the poems. English language readings will be provided by poet, translator, and publisher Stanley H. Barkan.
This program is brought to you by Cross-Cultural Communications, City Lore, Bowery Arts + Science, CATCH, and Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts, in collaboration with Korean Expatriate Literature and the Korean Art Society.
This event is dedicated in memoriam to two of Korea's greatest poets
Cho Ji-hoon (1920-1968) and Ko Won (1925-2008).
